In my quest for searching the world for natural skincare products I also look for what types of efforts each brand does for their community. Why, you may ask? Because for me, it is very important to give back to the sources you take from, as a beauty brand.
Teadora Beauty does just that! In Portuguese, “Teadora” means adores you. At Teadora, they show their love for the world with natural and organic products made with novel rainforest ingredients. Their products let you experience the bounty and magic of the Amazon – while helping to improve the lives of the communities where they live. Founded by Valeria Cole, whom was born and raised in Brazil, she was Inspired by her mother – who cared for her skin and hair with natural remedies – and by her grandmother – who taught her the importance of social responsibility. Teadora helps to fund a philanthropic exchange between the U.S. and Brazil to promote rainforest conservation, education and leadership development. Their deepest hope is that they are able to share a little bit of this amazing country with you, and in turn give back to both Brazil and the rest of this amazing world we live in.
I was fortunate enough to talk with the founder, Valeria Cole where she gave me insights into Brazilian beauty, their conservation efforts and the beautiful rainforest, the Amazon Rainforest.
Rochelle: What is the history of Teadora?
Valeria: Growing up I had an absolute passion for natural beauty and health products, my mother was fanatic about naturopathic health and beauty. She also taught me about the awesome wonder of the Amazon rainforest and how much it was our duty to protect this world treasure.
Growing up in Brazil cosmetics companies started to take advantage of sustainably harvested Amazon superfruit ingredients that had been used by indigenous tribes for generations to protect skin and hair and I fell in love with these products.
Throughout the 27 years I have lived in the US, I would bring lotions and potions to my co-workers in the consumer technology field and they loved them and always asked for more. Through the years I hoped a company in the US would start taking advantage of these amazing superfruits to create a line that was fully focused on them, but no one ever did, so I decided to leave my career in tech and follow my passion for bringing the US consumer Brazilian beauty secrets from Amazon rainforest superfruits and for helping to preserve this amazing world treasure. My hubby and co-founder who is also in the tech world had a passion for massage therapy, became a trained massage therapist and had a dream to open his own massage studio, so it was just so fitting that we combined our experiences and passion to create Teadora and bring a rainforest spa experience to people’s homes. (we still have a dream of opening a flagship spa experience/store in Seattle and hope to do so in the next couple of years).
Teadora In my native language of Brazilian Portuguese means: “Adore yourself, adored”. It is also a beautiful woman’s name that could represent any woman: me, you, or even Mother Nature herself. It’s a poetic sounding name that at its highest level means adoration and love. We adore the Amazon rainforest and we adore our consumers by letting them experience the bounty and beauty of the Amazon rainforest by transporting them to magical rainforest moments through a total immersion of the senses.
Rochelle: Please tell us about your conservation efforts and exactly what you do and how it works.
Valeria: At Teadora, we promote fair trade practices and responsible stewardship. By working with local cooperatives, we support independent women-led commercial activity, educational opportunities for youth, and a higher standard of living for all.
We visit the communities we work with, know the names of the people involved in bringing rainforest ingredients to you, and have worked, eaten, and celebrated alongside their families.A strong community will not give up the land they depend on to illegal logging, ranching or other destructive practices.
As consumers, we show what matters by voting with our wallets, and demanding transparency and accountability. We can all be part of ensuring the forest is worth more standing than cut. We believe conservation has to come from 4 specific sources:
- Government support and policy
- NGO and non-profit leadership
- Local community engagement
- Consumer action
As a consumer products company, Teadora believes that we can help build the economic stability necessary to ensure that the forest is worth more standing than cut. When a community undertakes sustainable harvesting, the income from that activity can be 5-10 times the income from logging or ranching. This economic stability relies on all of us working together.
We trademarked a program we call: Earth for you. You for Earth. Through this program we donate part of our proceeds to support a philanthropic exchange between Brazil and the US focused on youth education and leadership development, as well as rainforest conversation. We work with Non-profit organizations such as Tiny Purple Fishes, an organization focused on helping at-risk kids excel to become great community leaders.
Rochelle: Where are your products produced?
Valeria: We proudly craft our products in the US, primarily in California. Some of our products are also produced in Tennessee. We abide by the highest standards of quality and therefore want to make sure that we are able to stay close and oversee the process. We also believe that it is important to benefit the communities we love and do business in, as such it is as important to us to ensure we work closely with raw material providing communities in Brazil as it is to work with the folks producing our products here in the US.
Rochelle: What makes Teadora products the best of its kind in Brazil?
Valeria: Our approach to developing the products is really unique, we develop products with the intention of being able to transport our customers to magical rainforest moments for a total immersion of the senses from the comfort of their home. With that intention in mind, we focus on three key areas of product development:
The heart of our products: our key superfruit ingredients, which we hand pick from a performance focused perspective.
The essence of our products: our elixirs, which combine these ingredients together to secure the most effective results. The easiest way to think of these elixirs is to think about how multi-vitamins work.
The soul of our products: our natural scents, we are focused on bringing to life 100% natural scents that are inspired by special moments in the rainforest. We believe that consumers already have plenty of vanilla and lavender out there, we want to bring them something earthy, botanical and that will truly let them travel to this special place.
Last but not least, we make sure that our packaging helps to transport you by providing different textures and story telling that will complete the experience.
Rochelle: How does Teadora differentiate itself from other natural and organic skincare products in the market?
Valeria: By offering a really unique and differentiated set of ingredients: The heart of our products are the powerful, anti-aging Amazon rainforest superfruit ingredients we utilize in our formulas. Companies spend years in labs putting together the ingredients that will provide the right vitamins, oleic and fatty acids and anti-oxidants they need. These superfruits are naturally put together by mother earth and already contain all of these amazing anti-aging properties. Also by ensuring that we go above and beyond when combining these ingredients in our formulations. We spent quite a bit of time understanding how we could mix these ingredients together in order to really provide the best results and from that we created 3 proprietary Amazon superfruit elixirs that have become the soul of our producst. Each of these elixirs is crafted into our products by product type: whether they are a wash-off product (Rainforest Youth Elixir), a leave-on oil based product (Rainforest Hydration Elixir) or a leave-on emulsion (Rainforest Restoration Elixir).
Rochelle: Who you think is the leader in natural and organic skincare products from all brands in the world?
Valeria: There are so many great companies, doing so many great things It’s hard to pick just one. I continue to be a huge fan of Aveda for pioneering this market and showing companies there was something better. The trick is to stay true to your values as you grow.
Rochelle: What is the future of skincare?
Valeria: Better ingredients, better products, driven by consumer’s desire to take better care of themselves and to have transparent information from the brands they love.
Rochelle: What do you think is the single most valuable product one can use daily from your brand, and why?
Valeria: Wow, I love them all. Very hard to pick one, but if I really have to, I’d say the Multifunction Bath and Body Oil because it can be used in so many different ways. Our oil offering is so strong and so unique: with so many Amazon rainforest superfruit oils that compose our proprietary Rainforest Hydration Elixir + we also added Argan Plant Stem cells, which was the first cosmetic ingredient to work at the dermal level to revitalize your own skin to create a truly amazing, exotic, multi-purpose oil like no other. It can be used in the shower, before the shower, in the bath, or post shower in place of a moisturizer for folks with really dry skin like me. It is also great for massaging the scalp, s single drop before shampooing, given it contains Buriti, amazing hair oil and also for dabbing the ends of your hair for split ends and protection. Buriti, known locally as “tree of life”, it contains more vitamin A than most fruits and vegetables and is richer in Beta-carotene than carrots. I also like to mix it with the body butter for really dry areas of the body (a small tip that was provided to us by one of our first and most loyal customers).
